Update 10 November 2011: Wishes really do come true! Jordis Unga will be on Season 2 of The Voice!
Whether it was their intention all along or not, The Voice has proven to be a great platform for rediscovering “old” talent. I for one don’t mind that they actively scout for seasoned performers (and, unlike Idol, are upfront about it). The resulting talent pool is more grounded, has more cred, and more exciting than most of the simpering teenagers on Idol. It’s nice to see Javier Colon (and hopefully the others) get a second shot at making it big after being dropped by his label. Aside from major label dropees like Javier and Dia Frampton, we saw former reality TV show contestants like Tarralyn Ramsey (winner of VH1′s Born to Diva) and Frenchie Davis from American Idol Season 2. As executive producer Mark Burnett says, “It doesn’t matter where you came from. If you won American Idol and you wanted to try this, too, you could.”
One former reality TV show contestant I would love to see on The Voice is Jordis Unga from Rock Star: INXS (also produced by Mark Burnett):
She didn’t win and become the lead singer of INXS, but she was definitely one of the standouts of the show. Voice-wise, she has a distinctive rasp that would undoubtedly send the coaches spinning on their chairs:
Setting aside her epic high-note fail on Dream On (which I won’t link to; besides, no one but Steven Tyler should sing that note), Jordis has star quality in droves. I don’t know what she’s up to nowadays, but her MySpace still says “Unsigned”, which is quite a shame. Anyway, seeing as The Voice and Rock Star: INXS have the same casting director, it’s not unlikely that they’ve invited her to audition. Here’s hoping Jordis gives The Voice a chance.
